    What on earth was that woman doing smoking modern day cigarettes??

    • @inhighspeed
      @inhighspeed 4 дні тому

      Um, yes, all of the adults were smoking modern-day cigarettes, and the tobacco and paper they eventually had to use to roll their own were also modern. They were also eating modern-day food and using modern-day products (soap, face cream, etc.). It was just the packaging that was made to look old. I'm not quite sure I understand the import of your inquiry.

    When the worker found an infestation under the flooring and all that jumble, you wonder what other horrors are there even after the tidy up. Vile place and so tacky and grubby. I wonder what Health & Safety would conclude after a visit. The place looked liked hazardous. So much tat. I wouldn't want my child rolling around that place. Dust and germ collectors. Such an unhygienic place. I'm surprised too, the council allowed the terrible outside presentation to exist. The prices were extortionate and her reasoning was unbelievably dumb. She'd be better getting a licence to run a day crèche for parents to leave their children so they could gave an adult break. Obviously all the H&S regs in place with a Nursery Nurse present.

      Yes, from what I understand it has always just been an urban legend, but you'd think perhaps they wouldn't be quite so shady about it, that is, rather to say up front that the story is merely that and not based in actual fact. Or maybe they were completely unaware? I suppose neither I nor anyone else could possibly say for sure.

    Why doesn't PBS have shows like this? I'm an American and would love to see it from an American perspective. BBC have so many of these types of shows. This one, turn back time, electric dreams, the supersizers and more. Yet no American versions. Lame.... Why didn't they give the family some young hens? For eggs!! No, of course not...they had to give them fuzzy wuzzy little mammals. 12 hens = 12 eggs daily. 4 people? 3 eggs daily which is 20 grams of fully bioavailable protein per person DAILY. Yes, it's not guaranteed that you will get an egg per bird. It's still an efficient source of fully useable protein. Combine it with milk, legume and grain and some meat and it's enough.

      In theory, the idea of keeping chickens is a good one. However, chickens require much more in terms of feed than do rabbits. While rabbits can survive on grass and hay, which are decidedly not foodstuffs for humans, chickens cannot. Chickens require foods that are equal to what a human requires, such as fruits, berries, corn, and grains. The idea was probably not lost on the government at the time, however they certainly realized that the feed requirement would have been impossible to maintain for everyone to have kept chickens during the war, while feeding rabbits was much more practical and feasible.

    Please could someone explain to me why they asked for Ruth Watson's help, a woman who knows the business INFINITELY BETTER than she knows the back of her hand, if they are going to tell her she is talking nonsense etc?!?!?!!!!!!! They OBVIOUSLY HOPED that she was going to come in, tell them everything was wonderful, say poor you and go away again, and LITERALLY CANNOT stand the fact that RIGHTLY was NOT the case, due to their childish behaviour!!! The fact of the matter is, however, that if they want to see a positive change in their bank balance, they are going to have to grow up, take responsibility for the FACT that they are WRONG, and listen to what she has to say, no matter how much the truth hurts!!!!! Unless they do so, they WILL HAVE COMPLETELY WASTED her EXTREMELY VALUABLE TIME!!!!!!! Julie Gill, Glasgow, Scotland.

    My parents lived through the war in Sheffield. They experienced all of this as after London Sheffield was the second most bombed city because of the steel mills. A bomb went through the roof and landed on dad's bed. The house next door was demolished. My grandad was out of work for nearly the whole time and became an abusive alcoholic. There were 8 kids and sometimes they didn't even have shoes. My mom's father committed suicide, leaving behind his wife and two daughter's. This was a great way of showing people how it really was. Movies don't really get that point across like following this family through the experience. I was super impressed how their oldest son took on his "job" and did it with such dedication, took so much delight in saving electricity, something I'm sure would never have crossed his mind in the "real" world. Those kids were real troopers going through all that, but what a life's lesson. They have lived history. Seems to me that Michael was the only one who DIDN'T change through it all/ He spent most of the "war" away from home not experiencing what really happened back then.
